I wanted people to have to think about what I was portraying. Not every piece is as simple as it is first percieved. I wanted to capture pain and the sorrow that we often overlook when we consider notions of freedom.

We have the freedom to protect ourselves, protect our homes, protect our families. So often in the media recently there are stories of children committing gun crimes, carrying weaponry and so forth. Their misconception of need to protect often leads to the physicial pain of the individual, the pain of the friends and family, the pain their mother feels stronger than anyone that her baby has been slaughtered at the hands of another who practiced so called rights of protecting themselves.

We have freedom to choose our own lifes styles, yet we choose to give ourselves pain. We drink, we smoke, sometimes we even starve ourselves so we can mirror the images we can see in any book about the jewish holocaust, yet nobody steps forward and stops people from doing these things to themselves, and again we have the freedom to cause pain, suffering and death to ourselves, yet many of us cannot explain why.

We may have freedom of speech, we may not. We can be persecuted for saying the wrong things to the wrong people, we can even intentionally upset people and mentally harm them and we often dont reflect on the pain we've caused them, others may even justify us doing it.

We should feel safety and freedom in our own homes, but the lives of many people in their homes is a living nightmare of violence and abuse, some even practice this against their own loved ones, their own flesh and blood. We often take our homes forgranted and fail to remember that not everyone can go to their own homes to feel that safety. Some may be trapped in their own homes, feeling like prisoners, some may simply return home to an abusive partner.

The police force are there to make us feel safe, give us freedom to walk safely in the streets. Often they may abuse their power however, throughout history their is evidence of police forces abusing their power, attacking and discriminating against people for many reasons, taking away as much freedom as providing.

Prisoners may yearn for the freedom of outdoors, yet some people are permenantly outdoors or have inadequate housing or shelter.

There is so much we ignore around us and that we take forgranted. I hope that those who have looked at my work so far have looked and thought about each indivual picture before putting it on their favourites, I hope they have took something out of it and understood my message behind my work.
